Agápe, éros, philía, and storgē?

Posted on: February 28, 2010

Four types of love the Greeks catagorise them in:

Agápe – general affection or deeper sense of “true love”, sacrificial love?

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not easily angered, it keeps not record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…And now these three remain: faith hop and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

(1 Corinthians 13 v 4-7 & 13)

The feeling of being content or holding one in high regard. Feelings for a good meal, one’s children, and the feelings for a spouse. Could this be a peaceful, well being, joy based feeling?

Eros – passionate love, with sensual desire, longing, romantic, platonic relationship; Platos: appreciation of their beauty within that person without physical attraction, highest purpose of love is wisdom, or can it be:

Powerplant systems manager for recycling operator: “The answers simple! I love my daughter very much, I find her to be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! But where we are from that is not enough, every program that is created must have a purpose, if it does not it is deleted. I went to the French man to save my daughter…you do not understand?”

Neo: “I just never…”

Powerplant systems manager for recycling operator: “Heard of programs speak of love?”

Neo: “It is a human emotion.”

Powerplant systems manager for recycling operator: “No it is a word! What matters is the connection the word implies.”

Both Neo and the Powerplant systems manager for recycling operator went to see the French man for one purpose; to keep that connection they have with love (all the distinctions of the Greek meaning of love). It gives us a purpose (karma referenced from The Matrix), what we are here to do, to keep that connection at certain costs; love is blind?…the lover, the parent leaving the child in a better position of survival…interesting why they used an Indian family to portray this explanation of love.

I doubt any wisdom apart from the content of whatever will express love should be considered.

Agent Smith: “Why Mr. Anderson? Why..why! Why do you do it? Why, why get up? Why keep on fighting? Believe your fighting for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom or truth, perhaps peace, could it be for love? Illusions Mr. Anderson, plagiarisms and perception, temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose, and all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself! Although only a human mind can invent something that’s as insipid as love! You must be able to see it Mr. Anderson, you must know it by now! You can’t win! Its pointless to keep fighting! Why Mr. Anderson why! why do you persist!”

Neo: “Because I choose to.”

Free will, choice, decision, receive or reject love, sacrifice. All four terms are all in one. Most of us have accepted we have a beginning and end, what is the purpose of our journey? Do we know or just believe?

Tangent aside, no program, object, status can bring you happiness or love, but just the simple fact that both come from within, you choose to be happy or not, and you can’t rely on things/others to make you happy (recent self discovery-allot harder than it sounds).
